Areas of Interest

Perceptions of teaching in the 21st century are undergoing significant change. Teaching according to future-oriented pedagogy has served as a basis of my research in recent years. I have examined the development of the teaching profession with respect to the new teaching approaches, and the ability to implement and establish these views in practice.

The field of learning disabilities and how education systems deal with these students became one of the focal points of my research for several years and one of the key aspects of work regarding the professional development of teachers in different education systems in Israel. I conducted several research projects on the ability of teachers to include and contain students with learning disabilities in their classes.

Research

To this day, the subject of improving instruction and learning is central to my research and my professional development. I specialized in this field for several years (2001-2004) at the Branco-Weiss Institute in Jerusalem, focusing on processes of teaching that develop high order thinking by using active learning tools. At the same time, I began working as an academic advisor at the ministry of education and in several education departments  in northern Israel, where I founded units to improve teaching and promote the achievements of underachievers.

This work led to several research projects ordered by the Ministry of Education and the education departments, in which I evaluated programs aimed at improving the education ministry, methods of teaching, and examined their impact on the achievement and self-efficacy of students.

The field of learning disabilities and how education systems deal with these students became one of the focal points of my research for several years and one of the key aspects of work regarding the professional development of teachers in different education systems in Israel. I conducted several research projects on the ability of teachers to include and contain students with learning disabilities in their classes (See Raviv, A.  (2010). Between two evils: Stands and difficulties of teachers integrating pupils with special needs in their classes. International Journal of Learning, 17(10): 207-226 and Raviv, A. (2013).Tradition vs. innovation: Addressing the needs of pupils with learning disabilities in the Arab society in Israel. Journal of Learner Diversity and Identities, 1(9), 125-148.)

I am currently involved in broad-scope research on this subject in Druze society, in collaboration with Dr. Noha Bader. The subject of inclusion of students with learning disabilities in education systems in Druze society has not yet been studied in Israel from the perspective of parents and teachers. Druze society is a traditional one, and the ability to conduct research based on quantitative and qualitative findings requires a high level of trust from the participants.

Another field that I have studied extensively in recent years is that of curricula and social programs based on building bridges between students from different sectors in Israel (See Raviv, A. (2015). Friends beyond the bridge: Learning with others and getting to know the other. Diversity in Organizations, Communities & Nations Knowledge Community, 15(4), 11-25.)
